This will create a mysql.trace file in /tmp
the output of the trace file suspends just like the mysqld process, this is post innodb setup phase.

This makes sense now, mysqlmanager sends a signal, while safe_mysqld and the command line doesn't, so until I am told different I think I found a bug in mysqld introduced 5.0.34
